My sister observed a nice illustration of the Rule of Flow as she was helping clean up around her church family camp. In the bushes around the entry door of the dining lodge, she found lots and lots of sticks leaning up against the walls and bushes. She could just imagine the same conversation happening a hundred times.

“Sorry, son/daughter, sticks aren’t allowed in the dining lodge.”

“But, Mom/Dad, this is my special stick that I found this morning.”

“I know but they aren’t allowed in the dining lodge. Why don’t you go hide it back in the bushes so it will be waiting for you when you come out?’

“OK.”

And most of the time, by the time the meal is over, the child has completely forgotten about that particular stick and is off onto new adventures, leaving the stick behind. If inflow of walking sticks is greater than their outflow, the upper level of flow accumulates in the bushes by the front door.
